What is stop-motion animation?

Stop-motion animation is a technique in which physical objects are photographed one frame at a time, with small changes made between frames so that the sequence reads as movement when played back.

What separates it from other animation is that the objects are real. That gives it two properties nothing else has: a tactile quality audiences respond to, and a demonstrative one — because the object is genuinely being assembled or moved in front of the camera, the viewer watches something happen rather than being told about it.

That second property is why stop-motion outperforms other formats for instructional content. A film showing a physical thing being built needs no explanatory voiceover, and it works regardless of the viewer’s reading level or language.

DOT produced 41 stop-motion films for a single Albert Heijn campaign, matched across the entire run on lighting, camera height, surface and movement speed. Producing that many to one standard is a different discipline from making one beautiful film — a series watched back to back exposes any drift immediately.
